Top 5 Nutritious Eats in Brisbane

Top 5 Nutritious Eats in Brisbane

It’s Sunday morning, it’s a sunny morning in Brisbane and you’d love to just go and have a nice breakfast somewhere... you drive to your nearest cafe and find the menu is well the usual : eggs, bacon, tomato and scrambled eggs , avo smash on toast, muesli with fruit and milk, assortment of breads with spreads... your order the avo smash and comes with a sliced lemon wedge and maybe a sprinkle of dukka on top... it’s pretty typical breakfast these days and realistically you could make it at home... now there is nothing wrong with the humble avocado but with the up coming vegan , whole food and paleo diet trends sticking around, I think cafe establishments can do better with variety and creativity. I like to feel like my Sunday has started me off on a good nutrition and energy basis not sluggish, too full, needing a nap from a heavy meal

From a nutrition perspective, most menus are a little too carb and sugar heavy and don’t offer enough protein and healthy fat options. Most people like to brunch so a plate with some greens, protein, healthy fat and nutritious carb option would leave people feeling full but content and feeling light but with energy. A healthy nutritious swap would be replacing the pancake stack and ice cream with a plate of salmon, potato hash cakes and a side salad of greens in a delicious dressing coupled with a fresh veggie juice.

I’ve explored many a cafe for breakfast in Brisbane and have ended up with a short list of where I’d go for the reason that they provide balanced meals from nutritious sources, that is a good side of protein , carbs from high nutrient sources like sweet potato, pumpkin, rice, beetroot, spinach and freshly squeezed vegetable based juices. To top it off these cafes have amazing coffees on many milk options as well as fresh veggie juice variety. To top it off their menus offer fresh food options, good balance of macronutrients with unique flavours you won't find very often!

So what are my top 5 cafes in Brisbane?

  1. Cafe wrapture in west end : I’ve been brunching , lunching and take away-ing at this humble spot for years; their signature plates are their rice bowls, chicken wraps and spiced coffee. Their wraps are no ordinary wraps! All meals are made from quality ingredients and their sauces are made from scratch with good quality olive oils and tahini. Their breakfast menu offers a good balance of salads, rice , protein and their spiced coffees are a unique infusion of cardamom , cinnamon, star anise and even ginger

  2. Lokal + co in West End: I stumbled across this cafe after dropping off my son at daycare one day, i decided i'd work from home and grab a bite to eat first. I walked in and the vibe was awesome, the menu unique and a nice balance of flavours,  but best of all a nice balance of nutrient rich foods in their menu items. Their fresh juices are sooo good. If you want a good quality food with flavour this is a good brunch spot!

  3. Naim in Paddington: I knew this cafe as Shouk previously until the  name change but the uniqueness in menu mediterranean flavours and healthy options makes this cafe so ideal and a definite go to that will never disappoint!

  4. Just Earth in West End: For some reason west end offer such good variety! and Just Earth is such a good go-to for super healthy and yummy food, especially for vegan options. Their outdoor back area with playhouse makes it super ideal for mums with small kids as you can enjoy a good dish while the kids play safely and for me, this is so important! I love that this cafe has so many initiatives such as story time for kids and has a Just Earth foundation.

  5. Cambridge Lane Espresso in Manly: This little gem of a cafe is so popular every weekend yet you'd never know it was there! it offers a lovely alfresco seating outside and has made the backdrop of a few of my photoshoots! I love the food here, a simple salad has so much flavour, it has the right balance of healthy fats, greens, carbs and protein, their coffee is amazing and they are so warm and welcoming to all.
